Chaos and anomalous diffusion of adatoms on solid surfaces

چکیده
The microscopic diffusional dynamics of Na adatoms on a Cu~001! surface is modeled by the classical deterministic motion of a particle from a two-dimensional periodic potential previously fitted to the experiment. Depending on the energy of the particle, a series of chaotic transitions take place determining transport properties of the system. Two different regimes of diffusion, anomalous and normal, are reported and related to the chaotic dynamics. Simple periodic orbits are responsible for frustrated vibrational motions as well as unusual high rate of migration paths along particular directions. The connection between Lévy flights and the principal periodic orbits of the system is established, as well as the validity of some statistical models proposed to describe the anomalous diffusion process. The influence of noise and dissipation on this dynamics is also briefly discussed.

Chaos and transport properties of adatoms on solid surfaces
Some aspects of the theory of transport in chaotic Hamiltonian systems are reviewed and applied to a model potential for diffusion of Na atoms on a Cu(001) surface (Graham A P, Hofmann F, Toennies J P, Chen L Y and Ying S C 1997 Phys. Rev. Lett. 78 3900). Through a detailed investigation of the deterministic dynamics, we describe how normal and anomalous diffusion can take place, as well as the...
متن کاملCurrent-Induced Step Bending Instability on Vicinal Surfaces
Motivated by recent experiments on current induced step bunching on Si(111) surfaces, we study a generalized 2D Barton-Cabrera-Franck model, where adatoms have a diffusion bias parallel to the step edges and there is an attachment barrier at the step edge. We find a new linear instability with novel step patterns. Monte Carlo simulations on a solid-on-solid model are used to study the instabili...
متن کاملFirst-principles study of adsorption, diffusion, and charge stability of metal adatoms on alkali halide surfaces
In this work we have performed first-principles calculations based on the spin-polarized density-functional theory for the adsorption and diffusion of Au, Ag, and Pb atoms on NaCl 001 , KCl 001 , and KBr 001 surfaces. We consider also the influence of adatom charge on the adsorption and diffusion. In order to characterize the different systems we explicitly calculate charge transfer between sur...
متن کاملSurface Structures, Surfactants and Diffusion at Cubic and Wurtzite GaN
Clean and As covered zinc-blende and wurtzite GaN surfaces have been investigated employing density-functional theory calculations. For clean GaN surfaces our calculations indicate the stability of several novel surface structures that are very different from those found on traditional III-V semiconductors. Adding impurities commonly present in significant concentrations during growth strongly ...
متن کاملSubstrate-mediated Interaction on Ag(111) Surfaces from First Principles
When two or more atoms bind to a solid surface, the substrate can mediate an interaction between them. In this paper, we use densityfunctional theory to quantify the substrate-mediated pair interaction between two adatoms on a compressively strained Ag(111) surface and on unstrained Ag(111). On the strained surface, the elastic interaction is significant over the short range and leads to a net ...
